Modern horror at its very bestAll literary genres draw from and are based on their own tropes and conventions. You can't, for example, have a mystery without some version of a sleuth or a romance without, well, a romance. Horror fiction wears its tropes and conventions on its genre sleeve. A sense of impending doom, a degree of isolation from the perceived safety of civilization, something dangerous lurking in the dark, characters losing trust in one another and beginning to turn on each other, these tropes and others have characterized horror fiction since its inception. With his new book The Troop, Toronto horror writer Nick Cutter (a pseudonym for Craig Davidson, one of last year's Giller Prize finalists) embraces these and countless other horror tropes, creating a work that reminds us of why they're tropes in the first place: they work. In Cutter's hands, those hoary old chestnuts will cause you to pucker in places you didn't even know could pucker. gw2 gold In horror, that's a very good thing. And The Troop is a very good book. Readers know that something is amiss from the first page, a tabloid article about The Hungry Man of Prince County, a sensationalistic account of an "unnaturally emaciated" man who stumbles into a diner and not only shovels back "five Hungry Man Breakfast platters - each consisting of four eggs, three buttermilk pancakes, five rashers of bacon, sausage links and toast," but also consumes the napkins at his table before stealing the waitress's truck. The diner is just outside Lower Montague, a small fishing town on the northern coast of Prince Edward Island. Fifteen kilometres offshore is Falstaff Island, "absent of full-time human occupation." On the night that the Hungry Man eats his way through the diner, though, there are people on Falstaff Island: a local scoutmaster and a small troop of adolescent scouts. Of course the Hungry Man is going to end up on Falstaff Island; in fact, it happens on page seven. What follows is more than 300 pages of excruciating, exhilarating horror, threaded through with scenes so graphic they are literally stomach-churning (for both the reader and some of the characters). No, I'm not going to describe the plot any further. Horror works best when the pages ahead are an inscrutable darkness, holding their own perils, and I wouldn't want to rob anyone of the experience of reading the events of The Troop cold and blessedly uninformed. guild wars 2 gold The novel comes with the Stephen King stamp of approval ("The Troop scared the hell out of me and I couldn't put it down") which is fitting on a number of levels. In the acknowledgments, Cutter credits King's debut novel, Carrie, as an "inspiration" for the structure of The Troop, which, like King's book, features extratextual materials, including newspaper articles, interviews and the like, to supplement the narrative. That this structure doesn't seem like an homage (or ripoff) is a testament both to Cutter's skills and to the lingering power of postmodernism. Not only does The Troop lie firmly within the King tradition of modern horror, it will also resonate with his readers on another level. This story of adolescent boys, their strange intimacies and deep-seated rivalries, their flippancy and the intensity of their response to unfathomable events, approaches the emotional subtlety of The Body, one of King's most beautiful and haunting stories, and the basis for the film Stand by Me. And it packs a similar emotional wallop in its closing pages. The Troop demands to be judged as a novel of horror, and by that metric, among others, it's a winner. It highlights the organic inevitability of the best horror fiction while never being predictable. gw2 gold It surprises at every turn, though it wears its genre antecedents proudly. It will remind readers of the best of modern horror while cutting its own way through the wilderness, into the unfathomable dark. xboter 2014
